Peercoin launched in August 2012 and was the first coin to combine SHA-256 proof of work with proof of stake. Miners still produce PoW blocks with ordinary Bitcoin ASICs, and the network difficulty is a small fraction of Bitcoin's, which makes Peercoin a popular target for solo miners and hashrate rentals.
Note that Peercoin wallets count confirmations from proof-of-stake blocks only, so new blocks take a while to mature — that is normal.

Yes. Set the password to m=solo, or use the solo ports (1113 Standard, 1114 Pro, 1116 Elite). If you find a block you keep the whole reward minus the 1.5% fee.
Yes. Peercoin's proof of work is SHA-256, so any Bitcoin miner works. Use port 1111 (Standard), 1112 (Pro / rentals) or 1115 (Elite) with a PPC address.
Yes. Point the rental at stratum+tcp://bcmonster.com:1112 (Pro) or 1115 (Elite) with your PPC address. Use 1114 or 1116 to rent for solo.
